Priests are held to a higher standard than the people.  It is interesting to contemplate the key points made in this passage.  Priests must not be in contact with dead bodies or in outward signs of mourning, except for their closest family.  Priests must marry more carefully, not a prostitute or a defiled woman or a divorced woman. The high priest is held to an even higher standard – no contact with dead bodies and marriage only to a virgin.

A priest with a physical defect is not allowed to enter the inner sanctuary or approach the altar.   It seems harsh, but God says this will profane his sanctuary.
