God Speaks to Joseph Through his Dreams

  • Genesis 37:5-7 And Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him even more for it. And he said to them: “Listen to this dream I had. There we were, binding sheaves in the field, and lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves stood all around, and bowed down to my sheaf.”
  • Genesis 37:9 And he dreamed another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have had another dream; and behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”
  • The remainder of the chapter is the familiar story of Joseph going out to his brothers and their treacherous act of selling Joseph to traders, who took him to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard. Although there is no mention of God, His hand is at work directing the circumstances to establish Joseph in Egypt.

Prayers and Reflections on Joseph and his Dreams

  • Lord, it is amazing how you speak and act through flawed people, whether arrogant young men like Joseph or in me.  Help me recognize that when circumstances aren’t what I expect or desire, that you are still there, directing the bigger picture, when I am following you. Only when I’m following my own way do I need to be concerned. Help me have patience in obedience and discernment when I stray.
  • Lord, Joseph rightfully listened to You in his dreams.  Help me be as sensitive and open to what you’re trying to tell me.
