There are times where art seems at odds with worshiping God, but in this passage, it is clear that artistic ability comes from God Himself.  God didn’t need to create beautifully artistic pieces for His worship, but He chose to.  He also made it clear that He specifically filled the artisans appointed to work on the temple with His Spirit to enable them to create beauty.  He also gave them the artistic ability to carry out the work on His behalf.  How can we not realize that God loves beauty?  He created the universe with awe inspiring beauty for His glory, a mere glimpse of what we’ll experience in Heaven.  As I read about the specifications and designs for the tent of meeting and all in it, it is clear that God cares about both the materials and the resulting splendor of the items created from them.  How do we even recognize beauty except for the understanding of that beauty from our creator?

From this passage that talks about the creation of items for worship, comes the passage on the Sabbath.  This is a repeating pattern – creative work followed by rest.

God tells us that the Sabbaths are to be observed.  It is a lasting command and a sign that God sanctifies the people of Israel.  It is a serious command – anyone who profanes it is to be put to death, anyone who works on the Sabbath is to be cut off from the people.  It is a covenant between God and the people of Israel forever.  Finally, it is a sign between God and the people of Israel that in 6 days God created the heavens and the earth and on the 7th day, He rested and was refreshed.

Oh, how casually we ignore the Sabbath, yet as you read through the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, it is clear how important it is to God.  He expects us to honor the Sabbath because of His command, but He also created the Sabbath for our well being.  We choose to ignore both at our peril.

Finally, this section concludes with God giving Moses the stone tablets written with God’s living words, “the tablets of the testimony, the tablets of stone, written with the finger of God”.  How amazing!
