Walk in God’s Rules

The context of this chapter, and our lives, is that we are to follow God’s laws, rules and traditions, not those of the land in which we live.  For the Israelites, this meant not following the pagan practices from Egypt, from where they were, nor those in Canaan, the new home God set aside for them.

So, the question for us is, are we going to behave like the world around us or are we going to follow God Almighty.

Sexual Prohibitions Against Incest

My response to this section of the passage is, of course.  And yes, God does talk about some pretty intimate things, but He is an intimate God, not a distant God.

The final verse in this section is a little different:  ERROR: The IP key is no longer supported. Please use your access key, the testing key 'TEST'

Although we don’t practice polygamy in this country, the heart of the matter is still relevant.  Don’t create enmity between sisters through a sexual rivalry.

Other Sexual Prohibitions

Most of these would be acceptable prohibitions, except for one.  Verse 22 is a stumbling block to many, but God is clear.  When you consider the context, it is also clearly not cultural.  It is interesting that God re-iterates His prohibition against child sacrifice in this section as well.  Initially, it seemed an odd juxtaposition, but when I think about today’s sexual sin, it makes perfect sense.  Sexual sin often results in conception of a child and today’s child sacrifice is abortion.  So, in one passage, God prohibits two things that are dividing society and the church.

Don’t Defile Yourself and the Land

God reiterates how strongly He detests these practices.  They are the reason He commands the Israelites to destroy the people in the promised land.  He also talks about these practices defiling the land.  God’s not kidding.  He hates these vile practices.  Just because the people around you practice them doesn’t make them acceptable.  You have to choose – are you going to follow God or the world?
