God is with Israel as He Goes to Egypt

  • Genesis 46:1 And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac.
  • Genesis 46:2 And God spoke to Israel in the visions in the night, and said “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.”
  • Genesis 46:3 And He said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not fear to go down to Egypt. For there I will make of you a great nation. I will go down with you to Egypt and I will surely bring you up again. And Joseph will put his hands on your eyes. [will close your eyes]“

The remainder of the chapter details the journey of Israel and his family to Egypt. It also lists the members of Israel’s clan.

Reflections of God in Genesis Chapter 46

  • Israel seeks God by offering sacrifices, and God responds by speaking to Israel in visions in the night.
  • God first has to get Israel’s attention, then reminds him of who He is.
  • God affirms that Israel is to go to Egypt and that God will be with him there.
  • God reiterates his promise to Israel to make him a great nation.
  • Finally, God promises something close to Israel’s heart – that Joseph himself, Israel’s long lost son, will be with him at his death.
  • Lord, remind me to seek you always. Let me listen to your direction in my life. Thank you that, in any circumstance, I need not fear, for You are with me.
