Exodus Chapter 24 Israel’s Covenant with the Lord

Exodus 24:1-2 And He said to Moses, “Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy elders of Israel and worship from a distance. And Moses alone shall come near the LORD; but the others shall not come near, nor shall the people come up with him.”

The next verses show Moses’ response to God’s command.  He writes down everything he’s been told.  He tells the people everything. He has 12 altars built and animals sacrificed.  He sprinkles blood from the sacrifices on the people to represent the covenant. The people promise to obey. Then, Moses and the others come up to the LORD.

Exodus 24:10 And they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heavens in its clarity.

Exodus 24:11 But on the nobles of the children of Israel, He did not lay his hand. So they saw God, and they ate and drank.

Exodus 24:12 And the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law, and commandments that I have written, that you may teach them.”

So Moses went up the mountain with his guide, Joshua, and told the others to wait here for him and have Aaron and Hur settle any disputes in his absence.

Exodus 24:15 And Moses went up on the mountain and a cloud covered the mountain.

Exodus 24:16 And the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day, He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.

Exodus 24:17 And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain to the eyes of the children of Israel.

And Moses went into the cloud and was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

Reflections on Exodus 24

God called Moses and the elders to come up to the mountain and worship.

God called Moses to come up to Him on the mountain and be there with Him and He would give Moses the tablets of stone, and the law so that Moses could teach.

The children of Israel were able to see the glory of God and it was like a consuming fire.

One of the most amazing things and hardest for me to understand is that God calls us and wants us to just be with Him.  That is unbelievable.  It is shockingly brazen and disrespectful that so often we ignore both His requests and His commands.

We get so caught up in our own little lives that we forget about God’s glory.   The elders saw Him standing on a clear floor of sapphire and He graciously held back not to destroy them.  His presence was so great that it was like a consuming fire to the children of Israel. This chapter helps remind us of God’s Power and Greatness.  We can never be reminded too often.

Let us seek this awesome God who is all powerful and yet wants to fellowship with us.
